AMV's have been an integral part of anime fan conventions since the late 1990s, and one of the best known pioneers of their popularity is Daric “Jingoro” Jackson. Jingoro ran the AMV contest the first seven years of Anime Weekend Atlanta (and recently picked up the reigns again three years ago and is running it this year, too!)
